The Newark Presbytery Logo

The Presbyterian Church (USA) has over 11,000 congregations which are organized into 173 presbyteries (district governing bodies) and 16 synods (regional governing bodies). Newark Presbytery's distinct contribution to this mix of ministries is reflected in our mission design, and that design is now illustrated in our new logo.

The Presbytery of Newark (our official, legal name) shares same first three words with 172 other presbyteries, "The Presbytery of." What is our uniqueness? The answer: the word: "NEWARK!" No other presbyterian body has the privilege of loving the people within our bounds like we do! Referring to our presbytery as NEWARK Presbytery puts the priority of our mission FIRST. Its not just about the presbytery itself, but the 800,000 people living withing the bounds of Newark Presbytery.

Our logo puts the focus on the big red word: Newark. Multiple congregations and people are together represented by the multiple grey lines that are similar yet distinct reaching out of our sanctuaries and comfort zones transformed by the love of God toward the world. Our entire world reach is localized in mission right inside our bounds, illustrated by the world settling inside the "N" of Newark. Our mission is to be together transforming lives, congregations, communities, and the entire world in the name of Jesus Christ.

General Presbyter Installed at December 3, 2006 Commisisoning Event
Together Transforming… Lives, Congregations, Communities, World

More than 350 people gathered at the Bloomfield Presbyterian Church on the Green for a memorable musical, lyrical, rhetorical installation and commissioning service with the theme: Together Transforming Lives, Congregations, Communities, and World. The diverse, multi-ethnic expressions led by Mr. Jason Asbury (Prospect, Maplewood), included choirs from the Irvington, Elmwood United, and Korean United Presbyterian churches, a slide show featuring the presbytery in action, and inspiring worship and installation service led by our Moderator, The Rev. Denise Kennedy. The installation commission members represented a cross-section of the entire presbytery as our new General Presbyter was installed.

Other participants offered messages to equip the presbytery on its transformational mission including The Rev, Robert Burkins, (Pastor, Elmwood United), The Rev. Clint McCoy, (Executive for Partnerships, Synod of the Northeast), and The Rev. David Cassie (Executive Presbyter, H.R., Presbytery of West Jersey).

The Honorable Cory Booker, Mayor of Newark, accepted and stirred our presbytery's commitment to the City of Newark while Mr. Richard Levao, President of Bloomfield College, reminded us of our connectedness to higher education and learning. Those that attended enjoyed unique musical and liturgical presentations in multiple languages with an incredible range of genres and tempos. Dr. Yoho responded to the constitutional questions and the affirming response by the presbytery with a challenge to the presbytery.

Waves of delectable food and refreshments made their way through the reception that followed to the delight of the gathered guests. God's Spirit was present in a most unexpected and powerful way throughout the event, reminding us all that our compelling ministry is God's work and the result of God's gracious presence throughout every congregation and minister in the Presbytery of Newark.

To God be the Glory!
